To say that Dad's stay at Orem Rehab has been without mishap might have been a bit premature. Today Dad had a fall. Apparently his physical therapy and our encouragement to get better has caused him to believe that he is getting better a lot faster than he actually is.
This morning, Dad asked a staff member to help him to the toilet, and once he had been moved there, asked for some privacy. The staff member left him in the restroom by himself and Dad's overconfidence led him to think that he could get up and walk back to his bed. Dad's story seems to conflict with what we believe he is able to do. He told Jan that he stood up to walk and tripped over his pant leg. We're not really sure what happened, but I think most likely he just fell over off the toilet. He has serious issues with balance, and when he thinks he's sitting straight up straight, he's far from it. I am very surprised the staff member left him alone, because he has not been able to sit up by himself without help or at least the support of the back of a wheelchair.
We are all becoming a little concerned that Dad has possibly had another small stroke or something because his mind seems to be making up some alternate realities lately. We have a meeting with the care center's social worker on Wednesday, and hopefully we can also meet with the doctor and ask more questions about the fall as well as Dad's mental state. It's a roller coaster sometimes. I'll keep everyone informed as we go...

So sorry to hear about the fall, but these things do happen. I wish I had some gossip to share, but we have been staying home pretty much due to the bitter cold. I took Friday and yesterday off as bereavement days, and will take tomorrow off, also. Geri Anderson had a bad stroke just recently, only 57, I think. Hers I think was on the right and she is unable to talk. I'm not sure if she is in Williston, or somewhere else. Bill's funeral is Saturday. Phil stopped by with Alicyn today, but I guess I didn't learn anything other than that his dad seems to be doing pretty well. Greg and Joni may be coming up for Christmas. I just take care of kids, and really don't know much what goes on unless I am at work to hear something. I think of all of you often. I'll try to get a card with some pictures in the mail soon. Take care! Pam
ReplyDeleteHi Don, Well I hear you are still in Utah and haven't found a truck to bring back here yet. You have missed some wonderful weather. It was -32 on Tuesday morning and today it was about 30 above. Montana weather, who can predict it. We even had a little rain shower this evening. I hope that the roads are not too slick in the morning. Jacob got his license the other day so he is going up and down the road these days. He almost got a deer the other night, it is a good thing that it was not icy. I see that Ron and Barb Booth got a new Cadillac and I hear that he had ordered a new pickup. The caddy is white and looks kind of fancy. I need to start looking at a different vehicle but it will not be that fancy. I keep an eye on your place. I check it out whenever I go by which is everyday. I do see Willie on the road quite often. I check to see if his pickup is home when I go to work in the mornings and if it is there when I come home at night. Donny, Keep plugging along. Healing your body sometimes takes longer than we would like. Baby steps are sometimes the biggest steps we can take somedays. Hang in there and listen to the medical staff and to your kids. Sometimes they know more than we do. Sometimes that is!!!Take care, Dolores
